Columbia Planned Community Architecture & Drainage Infrastructure
As one of the nation's foremost master-planned communities, Columbia encompasses ten self-contained residential villages—including Wilde Lake, Harper's Choice, Long Reach, and River Hill—featuring a diverse mix of single-family detached homes and multi-level townhouses. Constructed beginning in the late 1960s, Columbia's subterranean infrastructure connects residential drains to the Howard County Department of Public Works municipal sewer collection network.
In older Columbia villages, residential building sewer laterals constructed from vitrified clay pipe or early thin-wall PVC traverse heavily wooded suburban lots. Root systems from mature red oaks and maples infiltrate clay pipe joints, creating dense root mats that trap cooking grease and hygiene products, resulting in lower-level plumbing backups.
